No matter what location you decide to choose as your holiday destination, in the end you are at the mercy of the quality of your accommodation when judging how good your holiday was. You can have what would have been the trip of a lifetime, seeing all the sights you wanted to see and having unique experiences, were it not for the awful hotel that you stayed in that let the whole trip down. A bad villa, apartment, hostel, hotel, or townhouse can really ruin an otherwise incredible holiday because it is where you spend a majority of the night and the morning; you return to it after a long day and you emerge from it at the beginning of the next. Our aim is to try and minimise the risk of staying at a bad hotel in Edinburgh. This is why in addition to our Which Luxury Hotels to Choose in Edinburgh article, we have also compiled a short rundown of the 3 top 4-star hotels in the city. While there are many great hotels to be experienced, it is these 3 that stood out from the rest of the 4-star accommodation.
1. Abercorn Guest House
There is just something about a large Victorian building that brings out the admiration in people. Buildings such as the one of Abercorn Guest House's stature radiate history inside and out, and its surroundings also make for a nice approach as you carry your luggage to the threshold and enter what is the very best 4-star hotel you will experience in Edinburgh. This hotel is in the eastern part of the city, though is at a very convenient location for transport and travel to the popular tourist destinations within Edinburgh. Built in 1870, this guest house is a former Manse which won the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2013 and offers a great selection of rooms in a grand Victorian setting.
There is a range of bedrooms from twin to double and family rooms, each with unique decoration but all with a clean and modern feel whilst maintaining the cosiness of an entire household. Flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi come as standard with the rooms, as does fresh clean linens and the usual amenities one would expect from a 4-star establishment. The prices for this guest house are quite sensational as well, as with a hotel of this quality one would be expecting to pay more than the asking rate of between £25 and £100 per room depending on the size of the room and the time of the year you are planning to arrive. With a 98% rating on TripAdvisor, we have no choice but to place this sublime establishment atop our 4-star hotels list.
Visit the Abercorn Guest House website to see for yourself the quality of the rooms that are on offer. There is also a handy section on the website that gives you information about Edinburgh itself in case you aren't familiar with your surroundings when you arrive.
2. Thistle Residence - Quartermile Apartments
Many would probably feel the fact that the Thistle Residence opened, the building was home to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, a piece of history that has survived and is providing residence to people to this very day. The apartments available range from regular 1-3 bedrooms, deluxe 1 and 2 bedrooms, and a premium 2-bedroom apartment that is the height of spaciousness and luxury. Modern, minimal design can be expected from these apartments at the Thistle Residence, as can excellent service and a memorable experience.
You will notice an abundance of windows in the Quartermile Apartments, allowing maximum penetration of light and ensuring that there is literally never a dull moment in your stay there. The hotel sits within walking distance of all of the major attractions of Edinburgh, and proximity to the city centre is always considered a plus. Reviews on TripAdvisor have also been extremely positive, with many of these reviews featuring prominently on the Quartermile Apartments website in order to display the many good times had by all who have stayed there. Though it lacks some of the luxurious features that a 5-star hotel would boast such as a spa and fine dining, these apartments are some of the finest 4-star rooms you will see in Edinburgh.
3. The Knight Residence
TripAdvisor's #1 ranked (Speciality Lodging category) 4-star hotel is nothing to be sniffed at. The uniquely-decorated apartments all feature supreme cleanliness and elegant design whilst ensuring a spacious stay. The rooms are split into 2 categories: city and comfort, with city having 1 and 2 bedrooms as well as a studio apartment to its name and the comfort classification having 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments. Each room has a fully fitted and equipped kitchen so that you are able to prepare whichever meals you may fancy, though the location of the residence is such that it is convenient to venture into the city to find some fine dining.
One of the many benefits of staying at the Knight Residence is that it affords you the option of parking your car instead of having to go out and locate a space yourself. This is a perfect 4-star hotel for family, couple, or solo ventures out into Edinburgh. The prices may be a little steep for some, but the studio apartment costs around £264 per night up to £598 for the three-bedroom comfort apartment. Booking can be undertaken through the Knight Residence website and the TripAdvisor page also allows you to read some excellent reviews of the hotel.
